Occupation without a purpose is to be occupied in being idle, where we busy ourselves only for amusement. Occupation with a purpose in being occupied is business. Business under difficulties is work. Work is business thrust upon us, where we either compel ourselves, or are compelled by others. We compel ourselves if we have a motivating ground which outweighs all the hardships of the work.
Immanuel Kant, 1784
